Athletics 9, Cubs 5

Chicago 15 June 2010 — After a 1-hour, 41-minute rain delay at Wrigley Field the Chicago Cubs (28-36) and the Oakland Athletics (33-33) started a baseball game. The Cubs’ gloves didn’t come. The Cubs committed four errors, including two in the four-run fourth by former Gold Glove 1B Derrek Lee and two more in a three-run seventh by Tyler Colvin, along with a run scoring wild pitch by Jeff Stevens. A sloppy game played on a rainy Chicago night.

Oakland’s Rajai Davis and Kevin Kouzmanoff, who extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games, led the charge with three hits apiece. Davis also drove in two runs to help the A’s recover from a weekend sweep in San Francisco. Trevor Cahill got the win for Oakland and improved 6-2 on the year and is now undefeated in his last 6 starts. Carlos Zambrano suffered the loss and dropped to 2-5.

Cubs 6, Athletics 2

Chicago 16 June 2010 — Derrek Lee returned to form at Wrigley Field Wednesday night with two hits, including a home run and some good defense to help Ryan Dempster get back in the win column and improve to 5-5 on the season. Starlin Castro and Alfonso Soriano each drove in two and Soriano even added his first sacrifice bunt in almost 4 years.

Conor Jackson made his first start in an Athletics uniform since his trade yesterday from Arizona and added two hits and a losing effort. Gio Gonzalez suffered the loss for Oakland and dropped to 6-5. Kevin Kouzmanoff’s 15 game hitting streak came to an end as well.

Cubs 3, Athletics 2

Chicago 17 June 2010 — It appeared as though Randy Wells with the help of pitching coach Larry Rothschild have corrected the issues that have plagued the right-hander of late as Wells earned his first quality start in almost a month by tossing seven innings of two run baseball to help the Cubs win the series at Wrigley over Oakland.

Mark Ellis hit a leadoff homer in the 7th to give Oakland the lead 2-1, but Wells was saved a loss by Xavier Nady’s sac fly in the 8th off A’s closer Andrew Bailey knocking in Kosuke Fukodome, who drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Fukodome entered as a pinch-hitter in the 8th and went 2-2. Geovany Soto also had two hits and scored the game-winning run on Fukodome’s hit past a diving Ellis with the A’s infield drawn in.

Dallas Braden threw six innings of one run ball and Rajai Davis and Ellis finished with two hits in a losing effort.
